Gabriel Savage is a Canadian (vancouver, bc) based electronic/pop music producer, recording artist. He is working on different music projects right now. We are sharing our recent conversation with him.
Twist Online : First of all tell us about the start of your music career.
GABRIEL SAVAGE : I started by writing songs and doing vocals for a couple rock bands, did that for a few years. I had the opportunity to go and record in California with this electronica duo called Noah’s Star – that was probably my first introduction to the ‘producer’ side of the studio. When I came back to town, I bought a bunch of studio gear to get myself started, quit my band, then locked myself in a room for a few months learning how to produce, then even longer learning how to engineer, even longer learning how to make it sound remotely good! haha. I guess you could say I really only started taking it seriously when I started producing for myself and didn’t need to rely on as many other people.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
GABRIEL SAVAGE : I started writing songs when I was very young, 10 or 11. I realized I had a knack for it when I was about 15 so I decided to join a rock band since, at that time, that was what everyone I knew was listening to. Fast forward a bit, and I guess you could say it’s still the songwriting aspect that I enjoy the most, along with the sound design and production.
Twist Online : Tell us about your recent projects?
GABRIEL SAVAGE : I’ve just been putting out singles. I don’t see the point in putting out an LP style album right now, not at this point in my career. So I’ve just been making songs and releasing them as they’re finished. That way there’s no real pressure or time restrictions, I find it much more natural. I’ve got some songs ready to master and release now… I’m just waiting until the time feels right.
Music available on Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, etc & available to stream free on YouTube
Twist Online : What kind of response you are getting from listeners?
GABRIEL SAVAGE : Some good, some great, some just alright. Not really any bad so far, not directly at least. All that really matters is they’re listening though, right? (laughs)
Twist Online : We came to know you are working on a collaboration for a new song? Any info to share with us?
GABRIEL SAVAGE : It’s all kind of hush-hush right now, until it’s finished. But I’ll say this, I’m not singing on it! The singer on this track is perfect for the vibe, and I think it will go over really well with my (and her) listeners! It sounds great and I’m really excited to get it out there.
Twist Online : What do you like more, performing on stage or working in studios?
GABRIEL SAVAGE : The two are very different creatures… so it’s too difficult to say. I guess you could say I’m a different person in both headspaces… one is mad scientist, the other is magician, right. I mean they go hand in hand, but they’re very different.
Twist Online : What’s your favorite music genre?
GABRIEL SAVAGE : I like good songs. It could be from any genre. I grew up listening to classic rock, disco, new wave and hip hop, but nowadays I listen to just about anything and everything. As a producer, I try to force myself to listen to as much music as possible without any genre bias.
Twist Online : Have you set some goals to achieve as a producer or artist?
GABRIEL SAVAGE : I just want people to hear my music… and I want to hear from those people! (laughs). I also don’t get out to perform much… I’m focusing on just putting out quality music for music listeners… but it is my goal to get out there and do more shows, whether live performances or dj sets more often than I have been…
