William Junebug Lee Chief Executive Officer at Bullets Production Team Talked With Us About Working with 20 Century Fox For The Movie “The Hate U Give”. The Hate U Given is a groundbreaking film about Starr Carter witnessing the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what’s right.
Music Manager William Junebug Lee grew up in Compton in a time where community was everything. The neighborhood parents looked out for each other’s kids. All around there was a sense of family and community. When William was 11 years old, he was walking to a local Winchell’s Donut Shop. For no reason, he was stopped by police officers. One officer asked where he was going? The other officer asked, if he had any drugs. Immediately, they started searching him. One of the neighbors notice the incident.
Miss Walk started shouting out of her kitchen window “leave him alone.” She came out of her back door and said it again. “I’ve known him since he was a baby. He’s a good kid.” The police officers got in their car and left. William turned around and started walking home. Miss Walk immediately called his mother. By the time he was half way home, his mother was walking to meet him.
The Hate U Give resonated strongly with William. “I am beyond excited to see this film come to forwishen. I pray it empowers a new generation of young people to find their voices. I’ve been working on the music licensing for a year and a half, after 20 Century Fox had a problem with one of the co-stars. As a result, they had to recast and re-film portions of the movie. I thought it wasn’t going to happen, but it did, says William.”
The Hate U Give, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film
Festival, opens everywhere on Friday, October 19.
