An interview with Australian drummer Corey Zammit

We are sharing here our recent conversation with an expert drummer and music artist Corey Zammit.

Twist Online : First of all please introduce yourself to our readers.
Corey Zammit : For those of you who don’t already know me, I’m Corey Zammit, I’m a 17 year old Australian Touring and Studio Drummer for bands such as Bad Cats and Target Practice.
Im currently endorsing Collision Drumsticks, CYMPAD, Big Fat Snare Drum, Drumdot and Zildjian Cymbals. Im also currently signed with a small Recording Label “Airwaves Recording Stuido” a local Australian Recording Studio.

Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
Corey Zammit : I’ve been playing drums since I could walk. As a child I was exposed to amazing musicians such as Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart and KISS from a young age. From when I was 3 years old, I knew music is all I wanted to do.

Twist Online : Are you a natural drummer or you have learned this art from someone?
Corey Zammit : I don’t believe in such thing, being a natural drummer isn’t possible. Although having a natural feel for a beat or groove is very real. I believe having a mentor or someone that can teach you specific skills is a very important factor for anyone’s musical career. For over 10 years I was taught by one of Australia’s most hard working drummers, Taylor Douglas. Not only was Taylor a teacher, he was a mentor.
Taylor helped me choose my current Acrylic Drum Kit and played a big influence on my playing and my attitude. Taylor helped me develop into the person I am today, Always going out of his way to make sure I was running smooth. For any aspiring drummer, get yourself a Taylor.

Twist Online : Tell us about your recent work ?
Corey Zammit : Ive just currently finished up with a Rockabilly band called “Bat Cat Rockers.” Bad cat Rockers was a very interesting experience for me as it was a different type of genre to what i was used to playing.
I was fortunate enough to play gigs once or twice a week with these guys from festivals to band rooms which really helped my exposure as a musician. I also was lucky enough to meet some amazing musicians such as Luke Schembri (Bass player in Bad Cat Rockers) Dizzy Hudson, Kid Hudson and Jake Schembri from the Strays who taught me a heap of stuff about the music industry and my playing.
Ive also fortunate enough to share the stage with a band called “Target Practice.” A Punk Rock band from Williams town, Melbourne who are an Awesome bunch of musicians who play alot of Good Charlotte, Green Day, Muse and heaps of other legendary bands. I look forward into progressing our exposure together in the future.

Twist Online : What attracts you more, performing on stage or working in studios?
Corey Zammit : Performing on stage is the best feeling in the world whether it be 100 people or 1000 people. The idea of sharing my talent with an audience has always been the deal breaker for me.

Twist Online : What’s your favorite music genre?
Corey Zammit : My favorite genre of music is Classic Rock and Hard Rock.
I like this genre because these artists inspire me as a musician and a person. Being exposed to this music as a kid is what made me wanna play music for the rest of my life.
Ive always loved Bon Jovi’s early hits, Poisons power ballads and the Guns N Roses riffs. I love this genre cause it reminds me of my childhood.

Twist Online : What is your plans for the next 12 Months?
Corey Zammit : My plan for the next 12 Months is to progress with Target Practice, play some big festivals and some big Melbourne Venues and release our first Single early next year.
Ive decided to stay away from tours for the next 12 Months so I can focus on graduating from school. But as soon as i graduate from school, ill be running wild, interstate and international!!
