Interview with multi talented DJ Candy Red

Today on our Hot Seat we have DJ CANDY RED. Hailing from Texas, this becoming globally recognized Trap / Dub DJ / Producer is an all American 6 foot blonde; remarkably memorable and we cannot get enough. Her unique flare of heavy bass driven style of EDM is widely craved among many.  She collaborates with many DJs and is receptive to all styles and techniques of mixing. She recently featured in the movie “All out Dysfunktion!”. She has seven tracks in the movie. Lets have chat with her.

Twist Online : First Tell us a little about the starting of your music career.
CANDY RED : Surprisingly I started when I was 27. I didn’t know much about music, EDM nor had I ever taken a music class. One of my friends talked me into attending an EDM festival in Dallas Tx called Identity Festival. At first I was thinking this isn’t really my scene. But eventually agreed. That night I experienced pure art to my ears, music and talent I had never seen. The specific DJs that really captured my attention were Rusko and Pretty Lights. I was actually mind blown. During the Headlining artist which was Pretty lights, I looked at my friend and said “I’m going to do this.” And here I am.
Twist Online : You are one of the few globally known female DJs. Was it difficult to get so far?
CANDY RED : You know, for me I don’t believe it was as difficult as it is for some. I am incredibly blessed. God has really placed the right people in my life at the right time. I have met DJs that have been at it for years and years grinding and barely booking gigs. My first little gig was a day party at Nocturnal Festival outside of Austin Texas, from there I was booked and then on. In the beginning I mainly preformed in Houston Texas. The underground music scene in Houston Texas will either make you or break you, let me tell you, those local artists are very territorial. Thick skin is a must, especially being a female. Although, I built a fan base spreading all over Texas and then on. Sponsors eventually picked me up from there and carried me the rest of the way.
Twist Online : You collaborated with many DJs. How much has it improved your music skills?
CANDY RED : SO MUCH!! I met a DJ that gave lessons in Guitar Center when I was looking for a good set of turntables. He gave me his card and I ended up booking him for 1 month of 2 classes a week. Since then we have worked together on a few projects. After somewhat being content with mixing, the next step was producing. A friend from LA put me in contact with Omar Santana. He is a legend in the Hardcore EDM scene. He has been at it since the 80s! Toured the world and album after album release. He has produced for some really big names including Michael Jackson. He flew to Dallas and worked with me for an entire month! It wasn’t easy learning in a month what most learn in years but I had to take advantage of such an incredible opportunity. Since then collaborating with other DJs and getting to know other DJs has definitely sculpted and shaped who makes CANDY RED. I’m still learning and soaking up new technics, idea and continually educating myself to be better.
Twist Online : You recently featured in film “All out Dysfunktion!”. Talk about your experience with being in a movie.
CANDY RED : One of the best experiences of my life! I never in a million years imagined being in a move, more so playing the role of myself. I learned so much about film making just observing and I have a whole new respect for actors and directors! It takes incredible talent and patience. Truly the experience of a lifetime. I wish everyone could experience it!
You can Pre-Order The Film Here. You’ll LOVE it!!

Twist Online : You had seven original tracks in the film AND acting talk about the process of working with the producers and director.
CANDY RED : First of all I still can’t believe there are 7 tracks of mine in this film.. I’m so honored and blessed to have had my music featured in this film. So very thankful. Working with the producers and directors of this film was nothing less than wonderful.
They made the process extremely easy and comfortable. Ryan LeMasters was so great to work with and he was so patient with me having no experience with acting or being on film. He made me feel relaxed and apart of the “All out Dysfunktion” family. I can not say enough amazingness about David Bianchi, he has been such a positive person and one of the reasons I had this opportunity in the film. He has helped me with so much and opened many doors for me. He is one of the most thoughtful and caring people I have met in the business. Not just an incredible person to work for but a life long friend!

Twist Online : What’s your favorite music genre? any particular reason?
CANDY RED : That’s a hard Twist Online to CANDY RED. I think Trap music is my favorite to mix with 2 decks. It’s challenging and I love base! For being creative and mixing with 4 decks I really enjoy spinning house and Tech House.

Twist Online : What’s your goal in life you want to achieve next?
CANDY RED : I know people say long term goals are great, but I’m a little different than most. I set spontaneous goals. Just like deciding in one moment I wanted to become a DJ and boom I did it. The day before, I would have never imagined I would be a professional DJ nor would I have ever thought I would enjoy it so much. It’s how I have always been. I never know what I’m going to decide to do tomorrow. I live every day to the fullest and in the moment. I try not to get ahead of myself. Being so right brained my mind and ideas change on the regular. My current goal, go bigger go better!

Twist Online : Any new project you are working on? When it will be released?
CANDY RED : Yes I have been working on a few new tracks, no date yet on when I will finish and release. I’ve really been practicing on different mixing technics with several decks and mashing.

Twist Online : Are you on Social Media? Your fans would love to follow you.
CANDY RED : Yes!! Please follow!
