Let’s Meet Talented and Sensational Vanessa Verduga

Urban Latin sensation and self-proclaimed “Justice Woman” Vanessa Verduga has returned to grace us with her latest single entitled ‘Owner of My Heart’. The track debuted earlier this August, and serves as the very first single of her upcoming, full-length LP entitled ‘Soy Mujer (I’m Woman).

With a superstar production team including the likes of Grammy and Billboard award-winning producers DJ Napoles (Enrique Iglesias, Prince Royce, Nicky Jam), Randy Wisky, and Kenny O’Brien (Celine Dion, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera), ‘Owner of My Heart’ succeeds in securing its place as one of the defining pieces of urban Latino-fusion music to come out of NY this year. If this is a taste of things to come, we personally can’t wait for the album to drop.

We got an opportunity to interview her for our interview section.

Twist Online : Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Vanessa Verduga : Hi! I’m Vanessa Verduga. I’m a singer-songwriter, actress, playwright, screenwriter, director, producer and lawyer. I wear many hats, but they all help define me ultimately as an Artist.

Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
Vanessa Verduga : My mother and, indirectly, my grandmother. I started singing, dancing and acting at the age of four encouraged by my mom, a trained dancer whose own mother (my grandmother) would take her every weekend to sing live at the local radio station in her native Ecuador. My grandmother had great hopes of my mom becoming a performer. However, my mom grew out of her artistic phase and thought I would do the same. However, although I went on to become a lawyer, I found my way back to performing. Thereby continuing my grandmother’s dream. Later on, having originally been a musical theatre and Broadway show tunes fan, it was once again my mom who influenced me as she got me hooked on urban Latino music, her favorite genre and now my favorite too.

My own talent as a songwriter came to me as a surprise outpouring of lyrics in the form of spoken poetry and rap, which of course shouldn’t have astonished any Bronx girl who grew up with hip-hop in her heart. These days I’m all about finding a groove and making you dance, with a sound that’s a fusion of reggaeton, Latin and bachatas – think somewhere between Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Nicky Jam and J. Balvin.

Twist Online : Tell us about your recently released debut single “Owner Of My Heart”?
Vanessa Verduga : “Owner Of My Heart” features lyrics written by me, music produced by DJ Napoles and Randy Wisky, and vocal production by Kenny O’Brien. It’s the first release from my forthcoming bilingual album Soy Mujer (I’m Woman). It tells the story of a woman frustrated by the relentless pursuit of a guy who can’t seem to accept “no for an Vanessa Verduga”. The inspiration for this new single came from a few personal experiences I’ve had with guys who wouldn’t take NO for an Vanessa Verduga and didn’t understand why I didn’t want to be with them. As if my being single and saying ‘I’m not interested in you’ wasn’t enough. They somehow thought that the more they pursued me the more I would realize that they were the one for me. It was all pretty ridiculous and frustrating. Truth is that it happens to a lot of women with men who are under the misguided assumption that being in a relationship is just what all women want. I mean, I’m open to meeting the right guy, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to go with anyone who comes my way.

Twist Online : More than 1 Million plays on soundcloud, you must be happy with the response?
Vanessa Verduga : Absolutely! And the music video keeps growing each day too with over 70,000 views on VEVO → http://smarturl.it/vOwnerHeart
Also, I’m kicking off the new year with the release of a second single from my album titled “Es Todo Lo Que Pido”, which is a romantic bachata, club music fusion, coming the first week of January 2017.

Twist Online : Any updates about your forthcoming bilingual album Soy Mujer (I Am Woman). ?
Vanessa Verduga : We hope to release the album this February 2017. However, I don’t want to jinx anything pinpointing exact dates because unexpected things always spring up in the entertainment industry and we just have to learn to roll with the punches.

Twist Online : Are you influenced by any particular music genre?
Vanessa Verduga : I am influenced by all Latin music, Broadway show tunes, R&B, Hip Hop, even Arabic music. What I mostly look for in music is the storytelling aspect of a song. As an actress, I love drama and a good singing voice that can deliver that is key for me. If I’m not feeling the singer then I can’t really get into the music. I need to be moved by the singer, the lyrics, the message, the performance and the music.

Twist Online : Have you set some goals to achieve as a music artist?
Vanessa Verduga : My ultimate goal is to bring a much needed feminine gravitas to the often male-dominated urban Latino genre. I want to give women a voice that goes beyond their objectification. With my lyrics, I want to send a message of empowerment, of women in control of their own lives and their own bodies. I am committed to creating bold statements, and standing for women by changing our reality by setting us free from stereotypes. Aside from that, I want to tour and perform for audiences worldwide. I also want to release a new album every year so I can continue living the dream.
